From the GRPL Vertical File:  Clarence Austen Frost (Jack) was born in Ferry, Michigan in 1895. He died in 1970. He worked in the Oakleigh School District as a teacher, a principal and as the superintendent. Once the Oakleigh Schools were annexed to the Grand Rapids Public Schools, Frost became a central office administrator until he retired.

Before C. A. Frost was built the system had another feeder school on the corner of Richmond and Bristol called Richmond School. That was in the 40's.  Later another elementery school was built. It was Covell School. By the late 50's, there were two more elementary schools, C. A. Frost and Oakleigh Elementery.  Also an Oakleigh Jr. High.

Before the school was built, this area was a farm owned by the Deuling family. It was a dairy farm. It was destroyed in the 1956 Standale tornado. It was decided to make this land a shopping  mall but two people said they did not want a mall so the neighborhood decided that they should have a school. It just so happened that this area was part of the oakleigh chool district and the area was growing rapidly at the time. When the school was first built there was a dirt road. There were wood chucks, deer, skunks and raccoons running through. The children made plaster casts of the animal tracks.

C A Frost was built in 1958 on 13 acres. On the west is Laughlin Dr., on the south is Trail St., on the east is Blanford Nature Center and to the north is Milo St. Behind the school is a field with a stream.

The oakleigh School District was annexed into the Grand Rapids Public Schools in 1961. When Frost School closed as a regular elementary in 1978 the district was split between Covell and Shawmut Schools.

The original building had eight classrooms. In 1973 Blandford School moved into the building. In 1991 the Environmental Sciences Academy, a magnet school,, also moved into the building.
