Campau School

 

This school replaced South Ionia which closed in 1928.

 

c.1953 from a Hall Street Scrapbook "Would Drop Campau School Plans, Prevent Segregation -- Additional school facilities - by (placing new buildings) on the fringe -- rather than in the heart of segregated areas. -- the proposed new Campau school would have virtually a 100 % colored enrollment by 1958. -- 91%  of all colored children in the elementary schools was enrolled in four schools and that this enrollment has increased sharply since 1940, while white enrollment has decreased."

23 houses were demolished between Antoine and Ryerson for a new school.  Agnew was vacated.  One house was purchased from the estate of Onie Howell, the daughter of Josephine Jeffries and Taylor Harper. She was born in 1908 in Mississippi and married to Prentiss Howell.  She died at the age of 43 in 1952.

1957 - Campau replaced South Ionia when Campau Housing Projects was developed. (Antoine, Ryerson) 1957
