Our Lady of Sorrows

109 Green St SE

The congregation of Italian immigrants first met in the basement of St. Andrews in 1908.Ancona

The first school and church were built at it's present location, (just east of the trolley barns), in 1921. Ancona

Fralick's subdivision in 1873 is part of Antoine Campau's farm. Antoine was the brother of Louis Campau.

An Italian lady I worked with, my age, attended this church and would talk about this annual parade.

A new church was built in 1957 and a new  rectory in 1958.Ancona

The government policies and the easy availability of travel destroyed Little Italy.

The school closed in 1970 and Italian Masses ceased in 1988. Ancona

Today the entire site is fenced and the church is kept locked.  Although when I visited  recently the neighborhood was very quiet and the casual pedestrians I met were cordial. Of course, I learned as a field worker for the City, to always visit stressed neighborhoods before 2 pm. That's when drug dealers and crooks get up so they can hassle school kids. And now the drug dealers are hanging out at Stocking and Fourth - St. Adalbert's turn.

I have to admit I don't like this church very much. It doesn't have a majestic front entrance, you have to enter from the side. Although built in 1957 it is not built handicap accessible You have to take a claustrophobic elevator just like St. James but that was built in 1873. I can excuse St. James but ------. Sorry, I do not like this building.

The daily entrance is off Green street showing at the bottom left a corner of the parish office, then the monster garage, the rectory. Center back is the rear of the church. On the right is the former school.

I also don't like this statue.
                                                 I think she looks demented.
