St Mary's 423 First Street The Village of West Grand Rapids 1843. Fr. McGee "Ground was purchased from James Scribner on the corner of First and Broadway, for $300 - In a short time a small frame structure, 75x30 feet, was built. " Where the rectory is now was the first location of the first St.
Mary's Church.
The lot at the corner of First and Turner was purchased from Mr. Turner by Mr. Thiele in 1863 and given to the Bishop of the Diocese that included Grand Rapids.
Steve Smith class of 1966 said there was a 1957 addition on the north side of the school that covered stairs that led to the tunnel that went to the gym added in 1957. They used to go down into the tunnel for air raid drills. On the south side of the school was a stairs and landing and that was the usual way they went in and out. City Assessor's Church Steve Smith - I remember the church, but have been in the sacristy, the basement, the connector between the sacristy and in the front office of the rectory. The only basement entrance i knew was the little door on the small 1 story brick addition on the north side of the church near the sacristy, we used to sneak down there. It was a dirty coal dusty Michigan basement maybe 6' high, with brick support pillars, brick base of the altar, some old workbench and stored pews and old lights etc,, the back ( toward Turner side ) got more and more filled with fill dirt as you went to almost to the rafters.Steven Smith Steve Smith said that he had to go to church every day and was so bored he memorized the stained glass windows which he still remembers today. I was raised Dutch Reform. We didn't have any stained glass windows. I counted hats. Rectory The card says the rectory faces Broadway Ave instead of First St. Steve Smith said he thinks one of those doors on the west side goes the the boys bathroom and the music room in the basement while the other door goes to the girls' bathroom. He heard but doesn't know firsthand that if you went into the drainpipe under the church you could find a grate that went under the girls' bathroom. He never investigated.

There is a little garden between the church, the rectory, the walkway and the garage that contained objects that reminded me of St. James garden. I got the feeling it was very private so I didn't go in. Steve said the sisters had a private marian garden and after the convent was torn down it was moved. Perhaps here.
