Stewart's Addition 1884

In 1891 the concentration of Polish workers' families in the northeast section of Grand Rapids led a group of men --- to buy land for a church on the corner of Diamond and Flat.Ancona  If the first church was built at the corner of Flat it would have been at the north end of the current site.

5 Sep 1897 St. Stanislaus was chosen by the Polish as the name for their new church but they were over-ruled by Bishop Richter who would not approve an ethnic Saint so he picked St. Isidore, the Spanish saint who was the patron of farmers.

By 1910 they needed a new church. In 1913 the first Mass was celebrated in the basement of the new church. The upper portion was completed in 1917. Ancona
